WALIS Internet Web Mapping Guidelines
A set of guidelines for WALIS agencies hosting internet web mapping sites have recently been developed through the WALIS Access Group and endorsed by the WALIS Council. These guidelines cover topics such as data security, copyright and conditions of use.
The guidelines will be effective as of 1 April 2002. Should you have any queries regarding the guidelines, please contact the WALIS Office on 08 9273 7042 during office hours.
GUIDELINES
1. Data being published from an internet web mapping service must be made secure.
2. The service provider can only present/publish maps in an image format or in an industry accepted and secure vector format.
3. A WA Government Crown copyright statement must be included within the map image and retained whether viewed or printed.
4. There must be a metadata statement for each layer of published data. A hyperlink from the service to a metadata system must be included in the browser window.
5. Statements for liability/disclaimers and conditions of use must be associated with the image.
6. Information from the web map service cannot be used for commercial publication purposes without appropriate permission from the respective data custodians.
7. WALIS agencies who are providing or using the data used in the web service will be subject to current WALIS policies.
8. WALIS agencies providing an internet web map service will liaise with the data custodians prior to making the service publicly available.
9. WALIS agencies providing an internet web map service will only provide a view of data with appropriate control for scales, in accordance with any licensing conditions.
10. WALIS agencies will endeavour to protect the privacy rights associated with the display of data through the internet service.

image - the generated image file created by mapserving
software.
data / layer / map layer - the data viewable within the web
mapping service can be vector (eg. points, lines or polygons)
or raster (eg. aerial photography, satellite imagery)
