WALIS Marine Group
The WALIS Marine Group's focus is all things marine such as coastlines, fishing zones, marine parks, coastal habitats etc...
The WALIS Marine Group was reconvened in April 2007 after an absence of a few years. Its' primary function is to facilitate the capture of marine data in areas affected by the marine environment and to promote the use, management and retention of this information on behalf of the WALIS community in accordance with WALIS presentation principles.
The group provides a focus for marine and coastal issues and information. The WMG facilitates the coordination and availability of marine and coastal data in order to continuously improve the effectiveness of surveying cartographic and analytical resources.

April 2008
This month’s presentation is presented by Western Australian Science Institution, WAMSI. This entails a discussion on the WAMSI Projects Underway and the Future of Marine Data Management. There is now approximate $51 million portfolio of projects underway, all of which will be generating marine and scientific datasets and have requirements for marine datasets. Find out what is WAMSI, in association with WASTAC and iVEC are planning to do about it?
WMG discussing the future of Marine Data Management
Richard Langford from DoIR is leaving the WMG at the end of April to pursue a career in the mining sector. Thanks Richard for all you have contributed. Your input will be much missed.
March 2008
The WMG monthly meeting was held on Friday 28 March 2008. Steve Blake from the Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) gave feedback on the National Elevation Data Framework workshop held in Canberra on 18 March 2008. See Steve’s presentation for the background, report and summary. The NEDF Workshop agenda, science case and other documentation associated with the workshop can be accessed from the ANZLIC website.
Barry Cribb representative from Landgate has resigned from the WMG. Thank you to Barry for his long standing involvement with the Marine group since its conception stage.
WALIS Marine Group Workshop
As part of the WALIS international forum, the WMG held a marine workshop prior to the main conference events. The WMG workshop was well supported by about 50 attendees from various government, research and private sector industries. The workshop got underway with a brief introduction and presentation by the WMG. Thereafter Melbourne and Wollongong Universities presented on various topics related to marine cadastre and the difficulties defining sea boundaries. PHOTO: Phil Collier (coordinator) and Students
After a light lunch and a chat we were entertained by Bob speaking of sea level change and shoreline dynamics. Toward the end of the afternoon the WMG facilitated a workshop to help build a business case toward a shared land information platform marine focus area. The day concluded with a cocktail welcome reception.

DIVE is a package designed to enable the State agencies and CSIRO to look at the data that was gathered by the Strategic Research Fund for the Marine Environment (SRFME) the predecessor to the WA Marine Sciences Institute (WAMSI). DIVE is a mechanism to interrogate information in a dynamic format. It is a tool for visualisation of data. It is an ongoing project and all data collected during the WAMSI project will be input into this system. The DIVE site URL http://www.per.marine.csiro.au/
The University of Tasmania was awarded $3.5 million to provide a data management, discovery and access system that will facilitate use of the collective national investment in marine science research. This is about creating a searchable database that allows data to be found and downloaded. All types of data are accepted. The project is all about archiving and preserving data for future use. Funding will be ongoing to progress this project into the future. There will be an online tool for researchers to create metadata, made available on the Oceans Portal. Agencies will archive their own data, IP issues will be addressed on the oceans portal site. This site is currently under construction.
