WALIS Road Group

The WALIS Road Group’s aim is to improve road data usefulness to efficiently update, maintain, and share road information to the benefit of all road data stakeholders.

WA Road MapA Routable Road Centreline Group was formed in 2006 when a Data Study was done to investigate the feasibility of creating a routable road network from available data. Recommendations included enhancing the existing road data network with the minimum base attributes needed to create a routable road network to be used for emergency services.

Early in 2008 the Routable Road Centreline Group started meeting again as a working group, now simply known as the WALIS Road Group.

Their focus not only includes progressing towards a navigational road network but also to streamline business processes across agencies to effectively manage and maintain road data for multiple uses.

The WALIS Road Group meetings are a platform to connect key users and suppliers of road data to find long term solutions towards creating a harmonized road model which complies with the National guidelines proposed by the ICSM Roads Working Group.

The WALIS Road Group includes representatives from Landgate, Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA), Western Australian Police (WAP), Fire and Emergency State Authority (FESA), Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA) and Local Government.

October-December 2009

Meeting scheduled for Thursday 29 October 2009.

On Monday 12 October, Main Roads’ Traffic and Safety Branch presented an overview of their national initiative for the Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) demonstration project to the Heavy Vehicles Operations group, other Main Roads staff and members of the WALIS Roads Group.

ISA is a device that is fitted to a vehicle that provides drivers with advisory information and/or supportive control when the vehicle exceeds the speed limit.  The device relies on a GPS receiver, a processor module and has a display device, such as a PDA.  Road centreline and speed zone data is sourced from Main Roads corporate road data base (IRIS).  System algorithms constrains the GPS-sourced vehicle location to IRIS data by utilising other stored data such as ‘Seal Width’, ‘Road Number’ and ‘Bearing’ and caters for ‘less-than-perfect’ centreline.

The aim of the project is for ‘Proof of Concept’ and to introduce ISA to Western Australia.  It is hoped that is can also be used to generate awareness within government and fleet operators of ISA benefits such as safety, environmental and fuel consumption.  Soon, the project will be used to test the hardware by alerting drivers when they approach rail crossings throughout the state by advising of approaching crossings and trains.

The Main Roads WA presentation on Intelligent Speed Adaptation, includes a video clip to demonstrate how ISA works. Or download the zipped file.
