WALIS Marine Group
The WALIS Marine Group's focus is all things marine such as coastlines, fishing zones, marine parks, coastal habitats etc...
The WALIS Marine Group was reconvened in April 2007 after an absence of a few years. Its' primary function is to facilitate the capture of marine data in areas affected by the marine environment and to promote the use, management and retention of this information on behalf of the WALIS community in accordance with WALIS presentation principles.
The group provides a focus for marine and coastal issues and information. The WMG facilitates the coordination and availability of marine and coastal data in order to continuously improve the effectiveness of surveying cartographic and analytical resources. View the WMG Strategic Plan for 2009 – 2012.
The WMG generally meet the last Thursday of every month. If you would like to get in touch with a WMG member or contribute to the Group’s effort contact marine@walis.wa.gov.au

DIVE is a package designed to enable the State agencies and CSIRO to look at the data that was gathered by the Strategic Research Fund for the Marine Environment (SRFME) the predecessor to the WA Marine Sciences Institute (WAMSI). DIVE is a mechanism to interrogate information in a dynamic format. It is a tool for visualisation of data. It is an ongoing project and all data collected during the WAMSI project will be input into this system. The DIVE site URL http://www.per.marine.csiro.au/
The University of Tasmania was awarded $3.5 million to provide a data management, discovery and access system that will facilitate use of the collective national investment in marine science research. This is about creating a searchable database that allows data to be found and downloaded. All types of data are accepted. The project is all about archiving and preserving data for future use. Funding will be ongoing to progress this project into the future. There will be an online tool for researchers to create metadata, made available on the Oceans Portal. Agencies will archive their own data, IP issues will be addressed on the oceans portal site. This site is currently under construction.
