WALIS Charter
The Western Australian Government coordinates the land and geographic information management of its agencies through the WA Land Information System (WALIS).
WALIS is a complex system with diverse participants both in the private and public sector. WALIS comprises a network of agencies that maintain standards, policies and cooperative arrangements to allow the sharing and integration of a wide range of land and geographic information held by individual government agencies.
To achieve maximum benefits requires a commitment to cooperation and collaboration. WALIS is founded on the principle that more can be achieved by a cooperative and pooled effort than individual efforts.
The primary benefit is based upon the fact that land and geographic information in WALIS can be used for a variety of different purposes. Each agency could individually collect the data they need but this leads to costly duplication of data and inconsistency between data sources. Given that each agency collects specific information for which it has a particular high level of expertise, it is more effective and efficient if agencies share that information and avoid duplication of effort and inconsistent data. Sharing that information and building up a consistent view of land and geographic information so that it can be used in many different ways reduces costs and provides greater support for decision making. This is the basis upon which WALIS has been built.
To ensure the benefits of sharing, cooperation and collaboration are achieved this Charter has been developed to identify the commitments required, and the benefit received of all participants in WALIS. Agencies wishing to participate in WALIS will be required to sign the Charter.
