ANZLIC Metadata

The ANZLIC Metadata Profile is intended to facilitate efficient access to descriptions of information resources, and in particular geographic (or spatial) data. Adoption of, and compliance with, the ANZLIC Metadata Profile will ensure a consistent approach is used to describe spatial information resources throughout Australia and New Zealand.

ANZLIC - the Spatial Information Council - is the peak intergovernmental organisation providing leadership in the collection, management and use of spatial information in Australia and New Zealand.  ANZLIC's role is to facilitate easy and cost effective access to the wealth of spatial data and services provided by a wide range of organisations in the public and private sectors.

The ANZLIC Metadata Profile is a standard which is intended to facilitate efficient access to descriptions of information resources, and in particular geographic (or spatial) data. Adoption of, and compliance with, the ANZLIC Metadata Profile will ensure a consistent approach is used to describe spatial information resources throughout Australia and New Zealand.  This in turn will help people and applications locate resources without the need to have a detailed knowledge of the data or resources being sought or an understanding of complex jurisdictional or organisational structures.

The use of standardised descriptions will enable online search engines to process queries more efficiently.  This in turn helps ensure that people and applications conducting searches are presented with relevant and meaningful results in response to requests.  Custodians of geospatial data assets will benefit as their information resources become discoverable by a much wider range of potential users, at negligible cost, than could ordinarily be reached through traditional marketing and distribution channels.

The ANZLIC Metadata Profile is an adoption in full (with minor changes) of the international standard for geographic metadata, AS/NZS ISO 19115-Geographic Information-Metadata.

The components of the ANZLIC Metadata Profile are:

  • ANZLIC Metadata Profile description.  Endorsed by the ANZLIC Council in December 2006.
  • XML: XSDs to validate the metadata records to prove compliance with the Profile.
  • XSL: a utility to transform existing ANZLIC metadata records into the new Profile format.  ANZLIC Metadata Profile User Guidelines: to assist in the use and adoption of the ANZLIC Metadata Profile.
  • Metadata Entry Tool: to create, update and validate metadata records.
WALIS endorses the adoption of the ANZLIC Metadata Profile in its entirety.  For any questions about the ANZLIC Metadata Profile, please contact Marnie Leybourne on (08) 9273 7046.
