Perth is receiving less rainfall. Climate scenarios predict it’s not likely to get any better. With declining rainfall and a population set to increase by 40 per cent by 2030, it is vital that we continue to look for the best ways to protect our existing water supply. The Gnangara groundwater system provides us with 60 per cent of Perth’s drinking water. Large volumes are also used by agriculture, local government and household garden bore users. It is also an important source of water for forestry and for maintaining our unique wetlands and native vegetation.
The WALIS International Forum 2008
As well as being a success in terms of the number of registered delegates The Forum also had the largest number of sponsors and exhibitors, enabling the trade exhibition to be held in the spacious Pavilion 1 of the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre. The Forum opened on Wednesday 12 March with pre-forum workshops. The WA Local Government GIS Focus Group attracted over 100 delegates to their afternoon workshops. The Forum was officially opened by the Hon Michelle Roberts MLA, Minister for Land Information, on Thursday 13 March, followed by inspiring keynote addresses by Rob Atkinson from CSIRO Land and Water on the use of spatial data infrastructures to allocate Australia's water, and Professor Lyn Beazley, Chief Scientist of Western Australia, on women in sciences.

Merger between SSI and ISA
The Spatial Sciences Institue and the Institution of Surveyors, Australia (ISA) are moving towards a unified merged entity. There is a working group representing the key parties involved, that have been tasked to progress the merger and work on the details.
Changes to Landgate’s Fees
Subject to the approval of the Governor, Landgate proposes to redefine its online products and pricing as part of its annual review of fees and charges. It is intended that a new fee schedule commence from 1 July 2008. The review includes an amalgamation of interactive search functions for names and other indices with primary search functions for obtaining copy documentation such as a Certificate of Title, Check Search, and Survey (Diagram, Deposited Plan and Strata Plan).
Grahame Searle receives top award at WASEA
At the WA Spatial Excellence awards on Friday 25th July, Landgate Chief Executive, Grahame Searle, was presented with the Professional Eminence and Excellence in Spatial Sciences individual award. In addition, he was made an Honorary Fellow of SSI. Grahame was recognised for his leadership in bringing SLIP from a concept to reality and for the way in which Landgate has been transformed from a State Government Department to a commercially-oriented statutory authority demonstrating excellence in customer service.

Landgate's role in establishing a network of continuously operating reference stations (CORS) across Western Australia began in June 2007.

CRCSI Conference 2008
