Spatial Technology in Schools (STiS) Competition - 2009
The Spatial Sciences Institute is once again inviting Secondary and Primary Schools across Australia and New Zealand to participate in the SSI Spatial Technology in Schools Competition 2009.
This competition provides an opportunity for teacher and students' work to be recognised, judged and rewarded. Prizes and commendations for Primary and Secondary entries, recognising the efforts of schools, students and teachers will be given in each SSI Region, which equates to every Australian State, Australian Territory and New Zealand. Winning entries will then be considered for the overall SSI Spatial Technology in Schools Excellence Award.
The competition aims to expose students to spatial technology. They are allowed to use any spatial technology (but primarily Geographic Information Systems – GIS) in innovative and creative ways to solve real world problems of interest to students and teachers.
Entries may be from any area of the curriculum and may use data from any source. The competition is open to any year group, the only stipulation is that students must use spatial technology to analyse and present the data.
Some of the projects submitted from WA last year, included GIS in Crime, The health of the Jarrah Ecosystem at Manjedal Scout Camp, Green Land Use at Darlington Primary School.
Interested teachers (and others) wishing to view some of last years projects, or to get further information, should contact Liz Marjot (WA Regional Coordinator) on 0403 018 667 or at liz.marjot@walis.wa.gov.au
Further information and entry forms will be available from the SSI website in the near future.
