2009 World GIS Day at Yokine Primary School
Year 5, 6, 7 students from Yokine Primary celebrated World GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day on Wednesday, June 3.
To commemorate World GIS Day, the students participated in activities such as:
- using solar GPS loggers, PDAs and ArcPAD software to map and plot objects around the school;
- listening to a presentation by Liz Marjot (coordinator of Spatial Technology in Schools), which included an outline of WALIS and its activities; and
- a raffle prize draw with prizes donated by ESRI Australia which included a $30 ColesMyer gift voucher, laptop bag, polo shirt, t-shirt, stationery and badges.
The students have also entered the Spatial Technology in Schools (STiS) national competition, and to this end, have mastered Google Earth and Google SketchUp software. They have been extremely enthusastic and hope to submit a very competitive entry into the competition.
